10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

This summer I fell in love with a dreamy face cream with a ridiculously high price tag. I hated how much I loved it honestly! And while it felt worth it to me to use and even re-order, once my last bottle ran out I felt determined to explore some other options and see if I could make my skin happy with a less expensive line-up of products.

I’ve had a tube of Weleda Skin Food Ultra Rich Cream in my makeup bag since summertime because I like to add it to my cheekbones for an extra dewy glow (a trick I learned from Katie Jane Hughes). I’d dabbled in using it as a daytime face moisturizer, but it’s definitely THICK — even for my dry skin — and best used at night as a mask than in the morning in my opinion. I remembered someone telling me that the Weleda Skin Food Light Nourishing Cream was still really hydrating and rich, so I picked it up during a Target run and let me tell you — it’s so good!! I like a rich moisturizer, I just don’t want it to feel greasy or like it’s sitting on the surface of my skin and this definitely met my skincare needs.

For full transparency, here’s the list of all of the products I’ve been using in my new routine:

While part of me misses the one-and-done routine I had going on when using The Rich Cream from Augustinus Bader, I don’t mind adding in a few extra steps to get the same (maybe even better?) results and spending a little less money on my overall product lineup.

Here’s a no-filter, unedited photo of my skin with super minimal Glossier makeup — concealer (in shade G9), blush (in storm) and brows (in shade brown for both)…

What are some of your favorite skincare products right now?

I love Weleda moisturizers for my dry skin too!! Curious if you could provide insight/compare the Olay Regenerist Retinol 24 Max Night Moisturizer to the Sunday Riley A+ High Dose Retinoid Serum?

    • Natalie says:

Oh yes, great question!! I ran out of my Sunday Riley A+ a while ago, then when I started using the Augustinus Bader Rich Cream I skipped retinol altogether, and then now I’m dabbling in the Olay Regenerist 24 Max. So, all that to say, I think I maybe need to do a trial with the Sunday Riley A+ for a month or so once my Olay runs out for a good comparison. The only thing really notable off the top of my head is that the Olay one is hydrating since it’s a moisturizer and retinol blend, and the A+ one needs moisturizer over it once absorbed.

  2. Anita says:

So happy I tried the Weleda moisturizer!! Thank you!! I am transitioning to non toxic skin care and I have loved this one.

  3. Amy says:

Although I miss seeing your insta posts, I appreciate your authenticity. I’ve been completely turned off of so many “influencers” the past few months, and unfollowed quite a few. As soon as I see Dime, Tula, Pura, etc. codes, I tune out. I love knowing what people actually love, and not just being paid to promote it, so thank you!

    • Natalie says:

Thank you for being here! While I agree that there are a lot of inauthentic influencers out there just looking to make a buck, I will say that the friends I have in the influencer space share about brands like that because they really use the products, like the products, and are able to offer their followers a discount. Just wanted to put that out there — I know when I share a code (like from Equilibria, for example) it bums me out when people suggest I’m doing it just because I’m paid, you know? Oftentimes I’ll use a brand for a while and then reach out to them to see if I can get a discount for my community and then it turns into a sponsored opportunity (which, you know, also pays the bills). Just putting that out there, and also 100% get where you’re coming from because sadly not every influencer has integrity.

      • Amy says:

100%! Let’s be honest, we all love a good sale or a discount, so thank you for that. I do actually like some of those products, and realize how much time goes into posts, links, so it can’t be just a fun hobby (especially as a mom, wife).

  4. Jamie says:

    Hi Natalie,
It was such a pleasant surprise to come across this post! I love your blog posts! I will definitely be signing up for your emails. Thanks for sharing your beauty line up. I have super dry skin. Can’t wait to try these moisturizers.

  5. Christina says:

I also love that brand, too. I have a light moisturizer from Weleda for body lotion and heavier lotion for my feet, elbows and knees. What works best on my face is mixing up Vitruvi base oils, complex oils and essential oil’s depending on my skins needs. I also use a prescription for retinol to help with acne.

  6. Kalie Russo says:

I was so happy to see your email in my inbox this morning! I have also been stepping away from Instagram, and I am grateful that I can still follow you here instead.

Do you have a face wash that you recommend as well? Also, I’ve been looking for a good eye cream for what feels like forever. Do you skip the eye cream with these products?

    • Natalie says:

Yay! Doesn’t it feel so good to not *need* to be on social media? I feel so free. And moving forward you’ll have access to all of the stuff I share via this blog and my emails/texts. I want to make it so nobody has to be on social media in order to follow along.

To answer your other question, yes, I use the Glossier face wash and it’s good. Linking it here: https://rstyle.me/+i08hlXVPzhBvQDlLx3IsDA

I haven’t been consistently using eye cream for a while, but I may add that into my routine this year. In the past I’ve liked Sunday Riley’s Autocorrect. Linking here: https://rstyle.me/+rkUZYTx_AHX2nGSkOSVbGw

      • Kalie Russo says:

Thank you for these recommendations! I haven’t been able to find either product that I love, so I’ll have to look into these.

Looking forward to following you in a new way in 2021!

  7. Lizette says:

Hello, I am currently loving Biossance , it’s a clean product I discovered on Instagram but I’m so happy I did!! It’s vegan which I love !! But it really works, the Vitamin c rose oil is amazing!! Also loving Ilia makeup it’s also a clean product too!! Lol I found the Think Dirty app not to long ago where you can insert any product to see how clean it is and fragrance always made all my products not so good anymore anyway 2021 will be a clean Beauty journey for me!! PS I love Weleda too and I’m so happy you’ll be posting more on the blog !! So happy for you and your new goal!!!

  8. Becca Keyser says:

Yay! So I’ve secretly been hoping you would make this switch selfishly so I knew the comparison! Ha! So excited you’ve found a new fun lineup! I’ve heard really good things about the Olay as well- yay for target run drug store finds lol sometimes I get so tired of ordering all the things!

  9. Ainsley says:

I’ve been searching for something like this! Can’t wait to try it.

  10. Brandie says:

Cocokind! Super affordable. Great company, and safe ingredients. They sell some of their products at Target.

  11. Jesse says:

I love this cream for my hands (too rich for my combo skin face). It is also amazing on my daughter’s super sensitive skin. I will always have them both on hand.

  12. Andrea says:

OMG I love Weleda! I stumbled upon the brand at our local Co-Op for kids shampoo and then bought the light moisturizer for me as well. I put it on in the morning. I also bought the body butter and put it on my hands before bed to help recover from all the hand washing! My hands are so dry! Great products. I love that nothing feels greasy and it doesn’t make my skin breakout.

  13. Laura says:

Do you use the Weleda in the morning only? The light one?

    • Natalie says:

Yes, I’ve just been using the light one and only in the morning since at night I have been using the Olay retinol cream and then a layer of the Equilibria face + body oil. If there’s a night when I don’t want to use retinol, that’s when I sometimes bust out the ultra rich cream and use it as a hydrating overnight mask.

  14. Annie says:

Loveeeee skin food! I agree that it’s extremely thick and oily, sometimes I need that but others I think the lighter version would work better. I’m going to have to try it now!
I feel like I’ve finally perfected my skincare regimen, and I’m seeing great results from using the same products consistently rather than always trying something new. My most recent addition is the skinfix barrier+ triple lipid peptide cream- it’s a rich cream that is similar in texture to drunk elephant’s lala retro, only cheaper and with better results. It changed the game for me, but it’s too thick for daytime which is why I want to try the light version of skin food like you mentioned. I use a lot of Cocokind products which I also highly recommend!

  15. Jamie says:

Hi Natalie! Sorry for the random comment, but I just got a text that you have a new number, is this spam? It asked me to text you at it. Also I noticed you haven’t been on Instagram lately, so I just want to make sure nothing fishy is going on.

  16. cynthia says:

i picked up the weleda skin cream after you mentioned it awhile back and absolutely LOVE it as a nighttime cream (i have oily combo skin). your skin looks AMAZING and i can’t wait to try some of the other products you’ve recommended! i’m also a big fan of biossance facial oils, though those are a bit pricier.

    • Natalie says:

Oh yay! So glad to hear you’re loving it, too. I agree, that ultra rich cream is such a dreamy night cream and leaves skin feeling so happy and hydrated in the morning. I’m super impressed with the quality of Weleda products, especially at such a good price point.
