10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

One really easy way to add color and pattern to your wardrobe is with a bandana scarf. It’s a simple accessory with so many possibilities! They are especially wonderful as the weather warms up and layering gets more difficult—they easily add a dimension to any outfit without making you sweat.

I’m wearing my Chloe Coin Necklace and Emma Hoops in Brass Circle in all of these looks, and incorporated my three Yearly Co. bangles in a couple of outfits—I have two Initial Bangles (with “J” and “L” on them for my kids’ initials) and a Twist Bangle.

For those of you who feel stuck when it comes to bandanas because you aren’t sure how to tie them, here’s a helpful video for you! Now, here are 5 ways to wear a bandana scarf…

This first look is basically my winter and early spring outfit formula: jeans, mules, top, jacket. When in doubt, this is what I turn to! I love how the bandana scarf adds an extra little detail. Some sizing notes: the cami is TTS, the jeans run big (size down 2 sizes from Madewell size), the mules run small (I went up 1/2 size), and I sized down in the blazer (wearing the XS).

I’m SO into bodysuits right now. I love how sleek they are with skinny jeans and a jacket or cardigan, and I also love the idea of them with skirts, too. This bodysuit isn’t available, but I love this really similar one. The jacket is one of my favorite spring purchases—the butterscotch color is lovely. It runs a bit big, but I stayed true to size because I love the slouchy fit, and it doesn’t lose shape thanks to those ties. These skinny jeans are so good and a great price point—only $68—and I sized down one size to the 26.

While I rarely wear my hair pulled back, I do love to use a bandana as a hair tie from time to time (remember this?!). This top is a recent purchase and a really lovely top for spring and summer. I got my usual size small, but went with the petite length to make sure the peplum hit right at my waist. The shoes are TTS (but need to be broken in!), and the jeans run big so I recommend sizing down one size from your Madewell size (I’m wearing the 25).

Alternative title for this outfit: what to wear to Disneyland to look cute and be comfortable. I love this outfit! To keep it classy if you’re chasing toddlers around, I recommend wearing bike shorts underneath (I like these $8 ones). The shoes and tank are TTS, and the skirt is true to my Madewell denim size (I always go down a size in Madewell denim—I’m wearing the 26).  Also, this belt bag is a busy mama’s dream—I have the XS.

Keeping it casual for this last look, featuring my new favorite shorts (they run TTS—wearing the 27). This top (TTS) is super cozy and a great spring option that’s easy to wear alone or layer. It is a bit cropped, so I recommend wearing it with high rise bottoms. The bag is old, but Madewell is selling a really similar one right now (linked it!), and I also linked a similar (and equally inexpensive) pair of gold sandals.

Which look is your favorite? Do you ever incorporate bandana scarves into your outfits?
