10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

Sleeveless Eyelet Top: Zara  / Denim: Madewell / Straw Bag: Zara

With the restock of the best-selling Bridget Tassel Earrings coming this Thursday, I figured it was the perfect time to showcase the one and only Shawna Rivera, who styles them better than anybody I know! In addition to being a style blogger and Instagrammer, she also is a real-life friend and sorority sister of mine. It’s been so special to see her wearing my handmade tassel earrings so often—and I get so many outfit ideas from her! Below she shares more about her style and how she incorporates the earrings into everyday looks.

Blue Striped Dress: Mango

Pink Striped Set: Zara (top bottoms) / Sunglasses: Diff Eyewear “Becky” Frame / Straw Hat: Urban Outfitters / Straw Bag: Zara  / Sandals: Madewell

Striped Midi Dress: Madewell

According to Shawna:

If I could describe my style in three words it would be simple, classic, and feminine. While I certainly entertained a lot of trendy styles and statement accessories in my 20’s, now that I’m in my 30’s, I find myself gravitating toward more timeless pieces, opting for minimal jewelry and favoring flattering silhouettes. That’s what I love about personal style -it’s constantly evolving. But then again, so are we. After years of trial and error, I know what looks good on my body and more importantly, which styles make me feel most comfortable and confident. The discovery of wide-leg pants last year was revolutionary for my wardrobe. So much so that for the first time in my life I own more pants than I do skirts and dresses. After trying on my first pair of Everlane Wide-Leg crops, I have added four additional pairs to my closet in a variety of colors. I used to be so against having similar intimations of the same garment in my wardrobe but now I’ve come to realize how genius the concept really is. If you know something fits and flatters your frame, why wouldn’t you scoop it up in every color possible?

Similar to sticking to a specific silhouette, I’ve also learned how gratifying it is to find a brand that works for you, too. 90% of my wardrobe hails from Madewell. To me, it embodies all three of my style descriptors -simple, classic, and feminine. And I love knowing that when I walk into a store or peruse their site online, I will always find something that fits my aesthetic. I’ve been artistic my whole life, so in adulthood, my clothes have become the way I express that creativity to the world. While I like to keep the individual pieces fairly minimalist, I do love exploring with unexpected color combinations or the subtle mixing of prints. I also always abide by the third piece rule since it gives the outfit interest and dimension. Whether it’s a straw hat (my collection is at 8 and counting) or a playful shoe, or in this case, a Natalie Borton tassel earring, the addition of an accessory becomes the exclamation point on an otherwise simple look.

In addition to running my personal style and fashion blog, Shawna Leeann, I also work in an office environment where the dress code is what I would describe as business casual, yet without denim. So having simple, timeless pieces is crucial for making my wardrobe easily transition from work to weekend. People often joke that my closet is probably the size of a small condo, but quite the contrary, in fact. I always make sure that the items I invest in can be mixed and matched a variety of ways to create looks appropriate for the various aspects of my life. And again, what really pulls everything together and makes an outfit feel like “me” are the simple yet impactful accessories. Lucky for me, Natalie creates the perfect pieces to compliment my wardrobe.

Thank you so much, Shawna, for sharing with us! You can follow Shawna on Instagram at @shawnaleeann, and visit her blog Shawna Leeann for even more stylish goodness.
