10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

My friend Shawna (she’s also part of Team Natalie Borton!) had an event at Madewell this morning, and while I was there supporting her I grabbed some of the new items that caught my eye to try on for you guys. I plan to do a more thorough fall try-on when more of the fall items are out, but for now here are some pieces that work well for summer and early fall.

The mules I’m wearing in every outfit are mine already, but they are also a new item at Madewell—I went up 1/2 a size for a perfect fit. I also have on my Emma Hoops in Mini Brass Bicone (available late September), my bangles from Yearly Company and my hammered gold ring from J. Albrecht Designs.

Both the top and the pants came home with me! These pants have a really flattering paper bag waist and definitely are more of a “work pant” type material that will be great for me to have for more professional things, as well as for date nights. I actually love this outfit as it came together accidentally in the dressing room, too. I sized down one size in the pants and the tank is true to size.

Just swapped out the pants here to show you a new pair of straight leg jeans that are real winners. I went down one size from my normal Madewell size and they are incredibly comfortable. If you need a less destroyed straight leg jean in your life, these are amazing!

This romper has a longer inseam than a lot of rompers I’ve tried before and it’s a true wrap top. I’d consider this to be a very mom-friendly piece that feels a lot like a dress (and has a very feminine feel), but is more practical if you’re chasing little kids around. The fit is true to size.

Here’s a denim dress that would work well for summer days now, and could easily take you into fall with a long cardigan and some boots. I sized down, but you could stay true to size if you have more broad shoulders or a larger chest.

Nothing like a black dress to really show you how dirty the mirror is, haha. This was honestly my least favorite piece from the try-on, probably because I’m not totally in on the puff sleeve trend. I did size down for the right fit in the body portion, but the arms felt tight where the elastic was and I didn’t love the shape of it overall. The material is really soft and comfortable, though! And the buttons are adorable. It also comes in yellow.

Lastly, this cardigan was one I was really excited to try in person. I love the color and the sleeve detail so much (it comes in two other colors, too). I went down a size, as I usually do with cardigans, but you could stay true to size for a more oversized fit.

Also, they have a lot of really amazing looking new shoes online right now! These are some favorites:

Would you recommend the Cindy loafers or the Gemma mules? I’m really thinking about getting them since you let us know they are 20% off right now!

I ADORE those trousers you’re wearing in that first picture. I’ve gotten really into sewing this year and pants like that are on my list to tackle! I have the fabric and everything – time to gooo!
