10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

If there’s one classic wardrobe piece that fits in anyone’s wardrobe, it’s a white button-down. There are so many different silhouettes that suit any taste. Whether you’re in your 20’s or your 70’s, a white button down just works! In this post I’m styling one of my personal favorites, the Courier Shirt from Madewell. I love the shape and fit—it’s something a little bit more casual and fun than a traditional white button down. It fits TTS with a boxy fit, but I wouldn’t size down.

In these looks, I’m wearing my Jaime Hoop Earrings in Metallic Gold Wood, which are coming to the shop later this month! I teamed up with @brightonkeller and @karlareed for this one, so be sure to check out their stories today and see their looks, too!

Here are 5 ways to style a white button down for spring and summer…

This is what I’d consider my springtime uniform. It’s a really simple look, but it works because there are little details that make it more interesting, like the shape of the jacket, the metallic finish on the mules, and the bandana for pattern. The jacket runs a bit big, but I got my usual size for an oversized fit since I can cinch in the waist. The jeans have been my go-to for months now—a dark wash skinny is a classic item! I sized down one size to the 26 in them.

This is my favorite look from this style session! I ordered this skirt on a whim and it’s so, so good. The pattern is perfect, the skirt is lightweight, and the slit makes it way more flattering on my body type. I went with my usual size small and the fit is perfect! Also, these sandals have been my favorites for years and they fit TTS—I love how this color helps elongate my legs. This skirt will definitely be included in my May capsule wardrobe!!

I love a good denim skirt, especially for spring and summer. This one fits TTS, but still has some room at the waist. If you don’t have much of a booty, you could probably size down (I tried the 25 and it fit the waist, but kept hiking up). These sandals are the same as the ones I had on in the last outfit but in a leopard pattern—they’re a new addition to my wardrobe for summer and I love them!

This one is more outside of the box, and I really like how it came together! As a San Diegan, jean shorts are a core part of my wardrobe, but they can easily be overly casual. I love how the blazer adds a layer of warmth and also more structure to the look—I sized down to the XS in it and it’s honestly such a key piece in my year-round wardrobe!

For this last look, I decided to go monochromatic and bust out my trusty white jeans. I’ve had these ones for years and still love them so much. I’m yet to find a pair I like better! They’re super soft and comfortable. I’m wearing my usual Madewell size (26). The mules and bag add some depth and warmth to the look—I sized up in the mules to the 7 1/2 and am wearing the XS in the belt bag.

Which look is your favorite? What’s your favorite type of white button-down? Classic? Sleeveless? Tell me about it…

I’m so sad the Abercrombie skirt is sold out and so are the Dee’s almost everywhere (at least in my size). These looks are all so good!
