10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

This outfit just makes me feel so much cooler than I really am. I don’t know if it’s the big fedora, or the retro-modern feel of the high rise flares. Whatever it is, I think I need to wear this more often because I just felt so legit in it!

Anyway, let’s talk about the look. One trend I’m loving for spring is black and white check print—I have the button down shown here, and a shirtdress and am also eyeing a scarf for an easy accessory to pair with jeans and a solid tee. I just can’t get enough! Though colored check print can feel really sweet and preppy, the black and white contrast keeps it fresh, modern and edgy. And since it’s neutral, it’s easy to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe.

As far as the styling goes, I’ve long been a fan of the “half tuck,” where you tuck in the front of your button-down but leave the back out for a more casual look that also is waist-defining. But now that I’m wearing high rise jeans all the time, I find that knotting my shirt proves to be much more flattering. Do you ever wear your shirt that way?
