10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

Wide leg crops are a style I’ve been warming up to lately, so I jumped at the chance to team up with Everlane to style these for you. For today’s styling, I teamed up with my friends Karla, Caitlin, Rebecca and Conni, who are all styling the exact same pants with me. We represent a variety of heights and sizes, so hopefully you can get a good idea from our styling sessions if these pants might work for you! You can click on any of their names to visit their LiketoKnow.it profile and shop their looks. In every look I’m wearing my Julia Earrings in Arches, which will be available on February 21st at 9am California time.

Before I start, I want to be sure to talk about fit, as I know a lot of you have sent over questions about that! They have a really nice high rise (I think it’s 11″), and a good amount of stretch—more than the Madewell Emmett crops. I thought I would hate the trouser pockets, but weirdly they actually make the pants more flattering. I recommend choosing your size based on the waist (I have the 2), and for length I’m wearing the short length pants here and I’m 5’4″.

I’m wearing the “ochre” color in all of these looks, and I loved them so much I already ordered a pair of the “bone” color (and am going to return my Madewell wide leg jeans) because I think they’ll be great for spring/summer and the price point is so good. I wanted to be sure they fit right up there at my waist, so I went down a size—and since they have plenty of stretch, they are comfortable and not too tight on my thighs. Please leave a comment below with additional questions—I’d be happy to answer them for you!

(Everlane generously gifted each of us a pair for this styling session. Thanks Everlane!)

Oh hey there fanny pack! These days, they’re called “belt bags,” and I have to say, I love them! This is my first one—it was sent over by Lo & Sons (the makers of my favorite crossbody), and I really love how this bag works with these high waisted pants. Very mom-friendly and travel-friendly! I don’t even have affiliate links to make commission off of these recommendations, I just love their bags so much I wanted to share—you guys ask about them a lot!

Here I just wanted to show you a better look at the bodysuit paired with the pants. I found two very similar ones here and here. I honestly didn’t hop on the bodysuit bandwagon until this past fall, and I can’t believe I waited so long. It’s a perfect layer under pretty much anything—wear it with skinnies and a cardigan, with shorts and a kimono, under a skirt, or with wide leg pants as shown here.

Wide leg crops / Top / Mules (TTS or size up 1/2 size)

An easy trick for nipping in the waist? Tie up your shirt! I personally find it to be so much more flattering than tucking in this type of top, too. I love the drapey look of this top and the chambray-colored stripes work well with the color of the pants. I went with metallic shoes to tie in the color of the earrings and add some femininity to the look. Mules are perfect for crop pants!

Wide leg crops / Gingham shirt / SweaterMules (TTS or size up 1/2 size)

Here’s a cozier springtime look for you, and I broke all of my own rules by tucking in a bulky sweater, haha. But I think it works here! Obviously the thinner the sweater, the better, but I will say I really like this sweater. It’s also from Everlane and it fits TTS.

For this final look I wanted to try adding in some color, which can be challenging with this color pants! I love this wine color paired with the dark khaki color. In my Instagram stories I also mention that another way to do this color combo would be to do a white or ivory tank and a long cardigan in this hue. Either way works! I also think you could get away with a red sweater or a pink sweater.

Thanks so much for letting me style these pants for you! Feel free to leave questions below…

Would you mind sharing the maker of your gray tee in the first look? I have such a hard time finding cap sleeve tees anymore. Thanks!
