10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

I shared about my wavy hair routine last week, and this week I’m going to actually show you my exact routine. I filmed it all from start to finish to hopefully make it even easier for those of you who have similar hair and want to embrace your natural waves. Everything good that I know about wavy hair, I learned from Atoya Bass. If you feel like you want to dive deeper into embracing your natural waves and get a bit more guidance, I know she’s opening up her wavy hair community again in June—more details about that here.

I do the same routine every time I wash my hair, though I do switch up my products sometimes. I’ve linked all of the products I used for this washday below.

  1. DRY DETANGLE. I like to detangle before my shower simply because it’s easier. I use a Behairful brush for this, but a Wet brush or any other brush specifically designed for gentle detangling would do.
  2. SHAMPOO TWICE. Yep, that’s right, I shampoo twice. I find the first round gets the product buildup, then the second round actually cleans my scalp. I used Innersense Organic Beauty Pure Harmony Hairbath and after rinsing it out, I don’t wring out the water from my hair.
  3. CONDITION. With hair rinsed and still dripping wet, I work the conditioner into my hair starting from the ends. The goal is to “marry” the conditioner and water together. I usually use about a quarter size amount of conditioner for this. If I need to add any more conditioner, I also add more water. Water is important (Atoya explains it here). When rinsing it out, I like to scrunch in the conditioner even more as the water runs through it. I used Innersense Organic Beauty Pure Inspiration Daily Conditioner.
  4. FLIP. COAT. SCRUNCH. This is where the magic happens! I am so thankful I discovered this super simple method because it is WAY easier than the whole wash-my-hair-upside-down routine I had going on last summer with Curly Girl Method. With wet hair—literally right after shutting off the shower—I flip my head over. Then I get a dime sized amount of gel, coat a section of hair, then scrunch. I repeat this all over my head and at different angles until my hair feels coated. I used Innersense Organic Beauty I Create Hold Gel. I show the process in my video, and you can also see Atoya demonstrate here. When my hair is all coated, I grab a soft t-shirt and gentle scrunch out excess water, holding for a few seconds at the root to encourage the waves to form and get that extra water out.
  5. DIFFUSE. Air drying is for sure an option, but I really hate having wet hair and with gel in my hair it takes so much longer to air dry than with zero products in it. So I choose to diffuse. I personally invested in a Dyson diffuser to reduce drying time and minimize heat damage. The reviews online are mixed, so it’s safe to say it’s not a great option for every hair type. But for my hair type and my personal hair goals, it’s amazing. It’s made diffusing so much faster, easier and honestly more enjoyable. (My second favorite diffuser, which is way more affordable, is the Xtava Orchid.) I aim to diffuse to 100% dry.
  6. FINISHING STYLERS. When it’s all dry, I shake out the roots, scrunch out any excess crunchiness from gel, and add some finishing stylers for volume and texture. I scrunched in some Innersense Organic Beauty Inner Peace Whipped Cream Texturizer on the lengths of my hair, then applied AG Hair Natural Dry Lift Texture And Volume Paste to the roots.

Oh, I just watched your wavy hair questions video, so my question is answered! Thanks!

  2. Holly says:

It’s wash day and I want to try the wavy method. You switched from Kristin Ess products – bad experience or just trying something new? Hope your summer is going well.

  3. Lindsay says:

This is so helpful! I have the same type of hair and it usually ends up half wavy and half sort of straight cause I never really knew how to style it. Can’ wait to try this.

  4. Lori says:

I am so thankful you posted this and your links!!! Just what I’ve been looking for!

  5. Jenna says:

I honestly used to enjoy reading your blog. I felt inspired. Recently I feel your posts all related to product lines that you have some sort of partnership with. I’m disappointed and wish you would reconsider posting some more original content.

I’m sorry you feel that way! I post a ton of original content to this blog for you all to access for free with the intention of making it easier for you to find your style. I typically only do 1-2 sponsored posts a month, and I’m unsure why this comment is on this post as this isn’t sponsored.
