10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

Getting yourself from wake-up time to getting-out-the-door time as a mom is a big adventure. Before kids, all we had to do was get up early enough to shower and get ready. Now, it’s more of a juggling game to feed the kids, change the diapers, dress the kids, pack the snacks, etc., etc. Time for us mamas is minimal in the morning, so I thought I’d share the 3 ways I help myself look and feel a little bit more put-together before I leave the house.

Plan around your family’s schedule

One big question I get a lot is, when exactly do you get ready in the morning?! I get it. The struggle is real. Mornings with kids are intense sometimes, and unless your kids are playing independently it’s pretty hard to get ready while they’re awake. The key is planning a time to quickly get ready based on your family’s schedule. For me, the easiest times are either before my husband leaves for work (so he can hang with the kids), or if I don’t have to be anywhere at a specific time, I wait until my son gets into a good groove of playing independently. The key to this is having my clothes and makeup ready and nearby. I’ve started to keep my makeup and hair products in the bathroom near the play room for convenience. If it’s a day I know I need a shower, I always do that before Jack gets up.

Rely on a Quick Makeup Routine

I’ve tried a lot of products and settled into a pretty good minimal routine for motherhood that makes me feel pretty and not look like a zombie. This is what I use:

Have 2-3 Go-To Outfits

A capsule wardrobe obviously is great for this (you can see my current one here), but you don’t need to be a minimalist to do it. Just have a few outfits (with shoes and accessories) you know you LOVE that you can easily reach for when you’re in a hurry. You’ll feel good in them and won’t have to waste time trying to make your outfit work. These are 4 of mine (I pretty much am exclusively wearing my 14K Gold Addison Necklace as an accessory with a newborn, or tassel earrings when I want to feel more playful or dressy):

Know Your Hair

What to do with your hair is the final piece of the getting ready puzzle. I️ personally feel like I️ look best with my hair down 99% of the time, so that’s my go-to (sometimes with a hat!) unless it looks really bad. If it’s looking lackluster I️ rely on dry shampoo for some oomph and texture and try to let my wavy hair be a little wild. I’d rather it be big and wavy than flat and dirty looking! For you, a top knot, pony tail or a braid might be better. The key is knowing an easy way to handle your hair when you are low on time.

Very helpful lists! I would add Dew skin, that you recommended and that I LOOOOVE (thanks again) for sun protection, for anybody living in So Cal at least:)
