10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

My love for the Harper Mules first started back in September when I grabbed them during this try-on. I honestly never even planned to buy them, but after wearing them with so many outfits I fell in love, and the more I’ve worn them, the more I’ve loved them—so much so, that I have bought two additional pairs since! In addition to the metallic gold, I also have them in English Saddle and the woven leather that’s shown above. Today I’m sharing 7 outfits for summer that all feature my woven Harper Mules. They fit true to size and just get more and more comfortable with wear.

This first look is easy, feminine and summery. I just recently ordered this top and was on the fence about it because it’s a bit “poofy” when I do just a front tuck, but styling it here all tucked into a skirt has me feeling like it’s a keeper. I love the flutter sleeves and eyelet detail! I ordered one size down (XS) and feel like it’s the right fit. This top would be SO CUTE with overalls, too! The skirt is true to my Madewell size (26), and I also found two similar options for you here and here.

Same outfit, different top and bag! The mules just work so well with this denim skirt. This adorable graphic tee was sent to me by Balzac Paris and I just love it for summer. Rust and copper hues have become a favorite of mine over the past year, so I love that color accent on the top. I got my usual size small and the fit is perfect (it’s super soft, too!). I snagged this adorable bag at the Clare V sample sale, and it looks like there is a very similar version on their site right now, which I linked (mine is the same bag, just a bit more of a rust color versus poppy red). I’ve wanted a red-toned bag for a while and this one won me over the minute I saw it!

Now that I’ve realized that dresses and belt bags are a match made in heaven, I’ve been digging out some of my old dresses from the back of my closet and am so happy to be wearing them again! This one was gifted a while ago from Sonnet James, and they have it available in pink stripe right now. I also found a similar option (though sleeveless) from Everlane for you here.

This is another oldie-but-goodie dress that I love for summertime with mules. Sadly it’s several seasons old from Madewell (search for it on Poshmark and you might get some luck!), but I did find several other gingham dress and jumpsuit options to replicate this general look—I love the dark gingham with the tan accents! I shared a similar jumpsuit look here, actually.

Same look, different dress. I love this dress so much, it definitely will be included in my summer capsule! While it’s only available in a few sizes, Madewell recently added a sleeveless version in a brighter red that is so lovely for summer. I ended up sizing down to the XS in the dress since I’m very small chested, but if you have more going on up top I’d stay true to size. This bag was gifted to me from 31Bits and has been a spring and summer favorite for years and I highly recommend it! That being said, if you want the same look for less, this Amazon one is really good (several of you have bought it and can testify to the quality).

And one more time—different dress, same accessories! I love a breezy shirtdress on hot summer days, and this one from Abercrombie a few years ago definitely fits the bill. I found some similar options for you to replicate the look—just add a basket bag and woven mules and you’re good to go!

I saved the best for last—this is my favorite look of them all and it feels the most “me” overall. I honestly am surprised how much I like the mules with the shorts, but it definitely works! The top is a recent Madewell find (I also ordered this yellow version and this grey version!), and while I’m wearing the small here I’ve already exchanged it for the XS because it’s quite loose—I recommend sizing down! The fabric is so nice and thin and makes a great summer tee option. As far as the shorts go, these are my absolute favorites. I wear them all the time, and every time I wear them someone asks me about them. Worth every penny for a San Diego girl like me who wears denim shorts so regularly! That being said, these ones from Abercrombie are the most similar budget option I could find—and they’re cute! You can see them on my friend Shawna here.
