10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

I finally added a pair of combat boots to my wardrobe and I’m honestly surprised how much I love them. I went for a less chunky option that gives the combat boot look without feeling too overwhelming and heavy. Whether you already have a pair or are thinking about a pair, this post will give you 4 easy styling ideas for wearing them with black skinny jeans. I also added a photo of how I’ve worn them with a maxi dress for fall—I love the mix of edgy and feminine with that combo.

First up, the denim looks. These are the exact boots I have and they’re true to size for me. I’m wearing these black jeans (c/o Madewell) in every look, but any pair of black skinny jeans you already own will do! Mine are regular length and need to be cut or hemmed (I’m 5’4″) so I just rolled them under for this post.

See my styling video here, and check out @stephanietrotta for more combat boot styling ideas!

Leading off with my favorite one—I love this sleek, minimalist, cool look. It’s so comfortable, too! My blazer is old from Target, but I found some similar ones: here, here, here and here. My turtleneck is from Madewell last year and this looks like the current version. This one is similar, too. My bag is c/o Madewell (c/o) and the sunglasses are Raen.

Here’s a cozy look for anyone living in a colder climate. I only really wear my warm coats a couple times a year, so I admittedly am not the best resource for cold weather style. But I think this plus some warm socks would work well if it’s cold out! This coat (c/o Madewell) runs big so I recommend sizing down. I sized up in my top (c/o Madewell), but wish I’d stayed true to size.

Same pieces as the first look, just swapped out the plaid blazer and added a long leopard sweater blazer (runs big, I recommend sizing down!).

Last up, a classic look with edge. To keep it from feeling too boring, I chose a patterned bag with a braided bag strap. The top (size down) and long coat (true to size) are c/o AYR, and the sunglasses are Raen. The coat is also available here in 1X and 2X.

P.S. Here’s how I wear these boots with my long floral dress (size down) and a leather jacket (another option here). It’s an easy way to transition a summery dress into fall or even mild winter days…
