I mostly share about fashion here, but a lot of you have requested more peeks inside of our home and I’m happy to oblige! Home is where I spend the majority of my time—my office is here, my kids love to play here, and it’s really just a happy place for me. Sure, I love getting out and grabbing a coffee or meeting a friend at the park, but more often than not I really do love being here at our house.
Our decorating plan has always been to tackle the common spaces before the bedrooms. After all, very few people ever see our rooms and we spend more time awake in the common areas than we do where we sleep. So we did the living room, kitchen, guest room and play room first, then eventually got around to the kids rooms and lastly our room. A very important part of the furnishings? Our bed. We sleep on it every single night, so it needed to have a bed frame we loved, a mattress we looked forward to sleeping on, and sheets we wanted to slide into after a long day of parenting and working.
Below is what the room looked like totally empty when we moved in, then what our bed area looks like now:
After having a wood bed frame for years, we realized we loved the cozy softness of an upholstered headboard, and the one we found was not only beautiful but super affordable (sorry, I think it’s only available in the San Diego area since we got it at a local store!). When we first moved into this house, we still had the same mattress I had before we got married, and we definitely were ready for something new. We did a ton of research and decided our ideal mattress was from Saatva, so of course I couldn’t resist emailing them to see if they wanted to partner up and they thankfully agreed! So, yes, our mattress was gifted to us and sharing about it here is part of the deal, but regardless of whether they gave it to us or we bought it, this was the one we picked out and would have no matter what. We love it!
Lastly, the bedding was a big factor. Again, when we moved here we had the same bedding we’d had for years and recently decided to revamp. We switched out our ridiculously large duvet for a lightweight quilt, and ditched the old sheets in favor of a linen set I’d been dreaming about for a while. Finally our bed is such a happy space to rest in, and it’s not too bad to look at either 🙂
The other key piece of our room was the nook off to the side of the bed, which started out like this…
…then somehow ended up like this (really messy) temporary nursery when Lucy was born…
We moved her into her own room right down the hall from us at 2 months, and then we knew it was time to seriously tackle designing that space. It’s a fairly large area and we went back and forth with how to use it—should we put our workout equipment there? Should we put a TV in there? Maybe some big comfy chairs? A couch? We ultimately decided we wanted it to be a relaxing little spot where we would drink our coffee in the morning before the kids woke up.
We furnished it like a little living room—a cozy leather couch, a coffee table, layered rugs, and a simple accent chair. Once all the furniture was in there, we knew we needed some real statement art to finish things off, especially since the wall behind the couch is visible from the door to our room. Brian was the one to find the print we ended up buying and I’m so happy he showed it to me. I LOVE cloudy beach days, and this photograph perfectly captures my ideal grey day by the sea. It truly makes me smile every time I look at it!
So there you have it, that’s our room! All of the sources are linked below for you.
Bed frame / Mattress (c/o) / Sheets / Quilt / Sconces / Side tables / Leather couch / Coffee table (found at Home Goods, this is similar) / Natural fiber rug / Sheepskin (sold out in white at Costco’s website, this is similar) / Ocean art / Stripe throw (similar) / Chambray pillows
I love how neutral yet layered your room is. It looks so cozy and effortless. You are a master of marrying function with style so something I’d LOVE to see how you organize your jewelry/ your jewelry box!
Thank you!
