Let me start by saying that pink is one of the last colors I reach for naturally. It’s out of my comfort zone—partially because it can be tricky with my skin tone, and partially because it can feel too sweet and feminine for me. But last week J.Crew sent over this rollneck sweater for me to try and as soon as I put it on I knew it was a keeper! It’s made of cotton and so soft and comfortable. And since we don’t get summer weather here in San Diego until July, it’s a pretty ideal spring piece for me right now.
Sizing-wise, the sweater runs a little big. I have the XS and definitely wouldn’t want it any bigger (I would normally order a small at J.Crew). Also worth noting: it’s a bit long on me, falling sort of around the wider part of my hips, and I’m 5’4″. I get a lot of questions about how I “dress tall” since many of you think I look taller (thank you!), and one of my biggest tips is to partially tuck in your shirt in the front. I find that tucking it off to the side is most flattering on my of my tops, and it really does wonders to elongate your legs.
In this post I’m giving you 6 outfit ideas that feature this sweater—5 super simple, classic ones and 1 wild card one that I couldn’t resist. I’m wearing the Jaime Hoops in Textural Mix in all of the outfits, and they will be available on Thursday at 9am PDT at natalieborton.com.
I love the balance of the destroyed cutoffs with the sweet feminine sweater. I have 2 pairs of Agolde shorts (they’re THAT GOOD), but if I had to choose between them, this style is my favorite. I am typically 26/27 in denim and I got the 27 in these and love the fit. The woven mules help elongate the leg line with the shorts (which I love). They run TTS and the price point is so good!
Here’s my wild card outfit! I already knew that I loved red and leopard together, so I figured the same would be true with light pink. And it was! I went with gold sandals (I linked a similar option) to keep it light and airy. This skirt is sadly sold out, but there are TONS of leopard midi skirt options right now and I linked some favorites for you. You can get more leopard skirt styling ideas here. Also, I know I’ll get questions about how I “tied” the sweater, so here you go: I sort of bunched it up, and used this clear hair tie to create a faux knot. Easy peasy!
White denim always feels very spring and summer to me, so I couldn’t resist this combo. These shorts are from Madewell last year and they still sell them! They’re super soft and comfortable and I have the 27 (I wear 26 at Madewell typically). These sandals are so easy to wear on warmer days and run TTS.
Last week I paired this denim skirt with a sweater and converse and officially added it to my mental list of favorite outfits. The sneakers keep the mini skirt feeling casual, and the sweater keeps me cozy when it’s not quite warm enough outside. The skirt runs TTS (I have the 26 and normally wear 26 at Madewell), and the converse are TTS as well. These slip on ones are seriously so good! I got them when I was pregnant and couldn’t tie my shoes due to my massive belly, and they’re still my go-to sneakers. Here are a few more styling ideas for them!
This look is basically just a warmer version of the white shorts look, as it’s the exact same color scheme. These are still the best white jeans I’ve ever found (I just wish they had a slightly higher rise!). And these mules get more and more comfortable with wear. I took my usual sizes in both the jeans and the mules.
Lastly, this is the outfit that inspired me to style this sweater for you several ways! When in doubt, ripped up straight leg jeans and mules are my go-to pieces. Sadly these exact jeans are only available in one size, so I linked the newer version for you. Mine are a step-hem, so if you wanted to create the same look I’d try this DIY.
