These black overalls are one of my favorite wardrobe items. The black denim and skinny fit make them feel elevated and adult, and they just are so mom-friendly and fun! Mine are the Madewell ones and they fit TTS, but with no stretch (I have the small). I also found a similar pair that I’m linking for you here in this post in case your size isn’t available right now at Madewell or you aren’t wanting to spend as much on overalls right now.
Also worth noting: all of the items in this style session are part of my current spring capsule! I wanted to challenge myself to only work from pieces I’m currently rotating through and I definitely proved that I have a lot of options.
I’m wearing my Julia Earrings in Matte Gold Arches in all of these looks. They’re currently unavailable, but I will be restocking them in the coming month or two, so be sure you’re on the email list to stay in the loop for when they’re back!
The brown bag and leopard sandals keep this look from feeling to start and warm up the color palette a bit. This top is no longer available but I linked a similar one for you! These sandals are a new find for me this season, as I’ve had the brown version for years and they’ve been my go-to sandals in warm weather. I got my usual size. I’m 100% on board with the belt bag trend in case you hadn’t noticed, and this one is a favorite of mine—I love that the belt and bag can be separated! I have the XS (and wear a 25/26 at Madewell if that helps you with sizing decisions).
A striped top and overalls are a perfect match (see a very similar look here!). This top is really old from Loft, but I linked an alternative for you that would work. These oxfords are such a comfortable flat shoe option when you don’t want to wear sneakers—they are TTS, but are VERY SNUG when they arrive and need to be properly broken in (learn how here). The bag is old but I found a very similar one for you! This type of bag makes any outfit feel lighter and more airy for spring and summer.
Easiest top to pair with overalls? A flutter sleeve! I love the way the overalls really highlight fun statement sleeves, plus a fancier blouse under down-to-earth overalls makes for a good high-low mix. This top fits TTS, though I did get the petite length to ensure the tie hit right at my waist. I recently ordered these sandals for summer and couldn’t wait to start wearing them. I bought them with dresses and skirts in mind, but they look great with the overalls to lighten up the black denim. They fit TTS.
The draping in this top pairs so well with the high waisted, fitted overalls—I love the way the sleeves look, and how the top sort of blouses out at the waist. I linked the current version of it for you above (the stripes look like a more grey color, which also would look great with the black overalls). The shoes have basically been on my feet since I bought them—so comfortable, fit TTS, and would work for wide feet! Woven details always work well for spring and summer.
This last look is a little bit playful and fun. Chambray and black denim are a match made in heaven, and a sleeveless chambray is a personal spring-and-summer essential for me. While headbands have been in for a while, and I admittedly have several of them, I still find myself slow to reach for them. Maybe I’m nervous other people will think I look ridiculous? Who knows. Whatever the reason, I’m going to fight through it because they are so practical for days when I want to have my hair out of my face but don’t want to put my hair up in a top knot. This exact one is sold out so I linked other options for you. The bag is my first Clare V bag and I’m totally in love with the hand painted monogram. It’s a unique personal touch. Lastly, the sandals are the same as the leopard ones above and run TTS!
Let me know if you have any questions! Which look is your favorite? Do you have black overalls yet?
Where did you get the wall art of the ocean behind you!? I love it and I’ve been looking for exactly that for my living room.
Hi Natalie! I love your blog, you’re so real and open, it’s very refreshing! And I love your style 🙂
I have a chance to snag these same Madewell overalls secondhand, and I’m wondering if you can share specifics about your experience with sizing? You mentioned that they fit tts, but so many reviews say they are up to two sizes too small. I only have one other pair of Madewell denim, so not a lot to go on. I have the perfect vintage jeans, Fitzgerald wash, in size 24, and they fit perfectly; the overalls are XXS. I also have the Everlane summer jeans in size 23, if that helps; I’m 5’4”, 112 lbs. Thanks for any insights you can offer! 🙂
Hi Natalie, I am such a fan of your style! Can I ask a quick question about the Clare V backpack – how much can you fit into it? I would love one, but need it to fit more than just my wallet, phone and keys ! Would it fit a couple of books/diary/bible in too??
Thank!
Henrietta
Oh yes, that’s a good question. I’d say it’s too small for a laptop, but it definitely could fit a few books/a bible in it, along with keys and wallet and phone.
[…] Belt bags and overalls are a perfect match—unless you urgently need to use the restroom, of course! But in all seriousness, just like the belt bag/jumpsuit combo I love the way the bag helps emphasize the waist. It works really well with this skinny type of overall I have. This top is so adorable under overalls, but also works well with skinny jeans, mini skirts or shorts. I have my usual size in it, but I did end up getting the petite length.
