10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

With Christmas just 2 weeks away and New Year’s Eve right around the corner, today I’ve teamed up with Everlane to share several holiday-ready outfit ideas using some of my favorite basics.

It can be tempting this time of year to buy a lot of “special occasion” clothing, but I like to take a different approach personally. I strive to have only a few statement pieces in my wardrobe and instead have learned how to take everyday basics and dress them up for festive or fancy events using key accessories. The best part about this is that you not only have something great to wear for your events, but you also have something high quality to wear over and over again in your everyday life.

Before I get into the outfits, here are my 3 tips for taking everyday looks into festive mode:

  • Red lipstick. I am a makeup minimalist and almost never wear lip color, with the exception of the holidays because it is the cheapest, easiest way to look holiday ready.
  • Gold earrings. Just like the lipstick trick, this quickly communicates “dressed up” when wearing otherwise very simple outfits. I rely on my big gold hoops, but really any metallic earring that falls into the “statement earring” category will do the trick.
  • The right shoes. Black suede pumps. Pointed slingbacks. White loafers. Whatever it is that you decide on, your shoe often determines how dressy or casual your look is. Choosing a dressier shoe (for me that’s often one with a pointed toe, as you’ll see here) really elevates simple looks.

Okay, now let’s dive into these looks!

Sizing notes: I went down a size in this curvy version of their jeans and am wearing the ankle length (I’m 5’4″) in the dark indigo wash. I went down a full size in the shoes.

Sizing notes: I went down 1/2 size in the shoes.

Sizing notes: I went down a size in these jeans and have the ankle length. They definitely stretch with wear for more of a boyfriend-jean feel! I went up a size in the sweater and I went down a full size in the shoes.

Sizing notes: I sized up in the top (I find their washable silk styles run a bit small). I went down a full size in the shoes. These jeans are the regular fit (not curvy) in dark blue wash.

Sizing notes: I went up a size in the cami so it wouldn’t be too fitted and I went down a full size in the shoes.

Sizing notes: I went down a size in this black jumpsuit (I’m 5’4″ for height reference). I went down a full size in the shoes.

Sizing notes: I went up a size in this sweater for a cozier, slouchier fit. I went down a size in the curvy fit jeans and have the ankle length (I’m 5’4″).

Sizing notes: The shirt has a boxy, oversized fit and I went down a size. I went down a size in the curvy fit jeans and have the ankle length (I’m 5’4″). I went down a full size in the shoes.
