10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

I recently popped into Madewell for a quick try-on and after sharing it on my Instagram stories, I thought it would be fun to share it here, too! The past couple of rounds of new arrivals honestly didn’t impress me, but these are definitely a different story! I went in there thinking only a couple of things would stand out and and literally could not stop grabbing things to bring to the dressing room with me. So. Much. Good. Stuff. Here’s what I tried on, plus sizing tips and my honest thoughts on all of it:

Texture & Thread Wrap Tie Top // This top is so comfortable and I really love the fit! The material is a stretchy jacquard, which makes it soft but it still has structure to it. The red is pretty bright, but it also comes in mauve, linen, olive and black. This runs TTS (I’m wearing a small).

Summer Ryder Cardigan Sweater // I just can’t get enough of this color lately! It’s more golden/mustard toned than cheery yellow like it looks on the website. I definitely took this one home with me and think it’s going to be a great summer layer for chilly evenings by the coast, and the color will translate really well into fall attire too. I’d recommend sizing down if you’re on the fence (I’m wearing the XS).

Scoopback Bodysuit in Rikki Stripe // Oh heeeeeeeey bodysuit! I actually ordered this one in black but it hasn’t arrived yet and I was eager to give it a try. The stripes are swimsuit-inspired, and surprisingly flattering. I would wear this layered under a cardigan for a sleek, sophisticated look. Ultimately I didn’t buy it since I think the black is going to be much more versatile, but I was surprised by how much I liked this one. I think this fits TTS (I’m wearing the XS and it definitely is too small!).

Texture & Thread Side-Tie Jumpsuit // I grabbed this right before going into the fitting room and it was better than I expected it to be. The cut is a little funny, since it’s clearly made to have a tank under it. There are ties at the sides so you can make it looser or more fitted near the underarms/ribcage, giving it a more customized fit. I didn’t end up purchasing it, but overall I liked it. This runs big. Size down if you want it fitted (I’m wearing the XXS), or stay true to size for an oversized fit.

Texture & Thread Tiered Tank // Cropped and ruffled, this tank has a feminine cool factor that I’m always trying to incorporate more of in my wardrobe. Also available in light pink and a golden hue, I couldn’t resist classic black. It’s so timeless and will work year-round here in San Diego. This runs TTS (I’m wearing a small).

Setlist Boxy Top in Marton Stripe // I really wanted to love this one, but ultimately it was a little too boxy for me. It looks good from the front—I love the cropped v-neck silhouette—but it’s less-than-flattering from the side, at least on my body type. This top runs big, so I’d recommend sizing down (I’m wearing XS).

Audio Tank Top // This is exactly the type of tank top I’ve been looking for! It has a good amount of stretch for comfort and the neckline is a dream. In addition to this bright ivory color, it also comes in persimmon, cargo green and black, as well as a variety of stripes. I took this one home with me and know it’s going to get a lot of wear this summer. This is a fitted style, so I felt more comfortable sizing up (I’m wearing a medium).

Wide-Leg Crop Jeans: Button Front Edition // I really thought I would hate these and only tried them on to confirm my anticipated hatred. But I actually-kind-of-sort-of-maybe like these jeans. Not enough to buy them (still waaaaay out of my comfort zone for denim!), but they are seriously so comfortable I was a teensy bit tempted. These are TTS for Madewell denim (I’m wearing a 26). I’m 5’4″ for reference on the length!

The Sari Criss Cross Sandal // Lastly, I couldn’t resist trying on these block heeled mules before I left. They are so nice and cushy and the heel isn’t too high. This nutmeg color is my favorite, but it also comes in cider, spruce, and antique purple. These fit TTS but if in doubt go up 1/2 size.

P.S. I’m wearing the Bridget Tassel Earrings from my shop in all of these photos.
