10 Rules for Effortless, Everyday Style

In this series, I share some simple tips for leveling up your daily looks.

I’ve had a lot of requests lately for a round up of wardrobe staples, so I figured it was time to finally make it happen! I do have more clothing than this (my wardrobe isn’t as minimalist as I’d like it to be yet!), but these are 30 of the things I reach for over and over and rely on heavily week after week. These staples are all neutral (I hate wearing color!) and they are perfect for my casual lifestyle. I don’t work in an office and am on mom duty 90% of the time, so I wear things that are comfortable and can easily be cleaned and keep a few items around that can easily take a casual outfit to a date night/girls’ night outfit.

Not included on this list are accessories—hats, bags, jewelry—but they are really essential in a minimalist wardrobe so don’t forget to wear them! We’ll have to dedicate another post to my favorites of those, but I’ll tell you now that a wide brim fedora, a leather crossbody and a long necklace are all in my regular rotation.

Okay, now let’s get to it. Linked below are items that are either what I have in my wardrobe, or something super similar…

Tops
Bottoms
Dresses
Outerwear
  • Long sweater (I love light neutral like tan, ivory or grey, but black works too)
  • Olive or army green jacket
  • Black puffer vest (Such an easy layer for chilly days/evenings. Also works really well for athleisure looks.)
  • Long camel coat (This is a timeless piece. Even though I only wear mine a few times a year in San Diego, I’ve had mine for almost 7 years and I still get asked about it all the time.)
Shoes
  • Black pumps (You won’t wear these that often, but they make any outfit date night appropriate—even your skinny jeans and tee shirt. Add lipstick and you’ve got instant cool girl status.)
  • Flat ankle boots
  • Black pointed flats (These can be as dressy or as casual as you want them to be. This is another great option.)
  • Heeled tan sandals
  • Leopard loafers (I love calf hair for more detail. These will instantly add interest to the most simple of outfits.)
  • Tan sandals (A warm weather essential! Skip the flip flops and opt for a t-strap or gladiator style for an instant outfit upgrade.)
